You’re not imagining things. That extra weight seems to have appeared out of nowhere. Your energy levels are plummeting, and your once-reliable metabolism feels like it’s gone on vacation. Sound familiar?
Understanding these changes gives you the power to take control of your health and well-being. You’re not alone. Many of us experience a shift in our bodies as we age. Hormonal fluctuations can wreak havoc on our metabolism, making it difficult to lose weight and maintain a healthy body.
The “Why” Behind the Weight Gain
Your body is a complex machine. As estrogen and progesterone levels decline, your body may shift into “survival mode.” It starts to store fat as a protective mechanism, much like an animal preparing for hibernation.
In addition, chronic stress can lead to overproduction of cortisol. Cortisol, the stress hormone, is produced by the adrenal glands and plays a role in metabolism and immune response.
Pair the two, and you will get a vicious cycle of weight gain and insulin resistance. It’s a middle-aged gift to you!
But here’s the good news: You have the power to influence the cycle and overcome it.
Movement is key. When we move our bodies, we not only burn calories but also regulate hormone production. Walking, yoga, and strength training can help reduce stress hormones like cortisol and improve insulin sensitivity.
Our bodies are designed to move. In nature, we constantly moved, hunted, gathered, and explored. Today, many of us spend most of our time sitting. This sedentary lifestyle can significantly impact our hormonal balance and overall health.
By adding regular physical activity into your daily routine, you can:
- Boost your metabolism: Increase calories burned and improve body composition by shedding excess fat.
- Reduce stress: Physical activity releases endorphins and helps to reduce stress hormones like cortisol to promote relaxation and/ or boost mood.
- Improve sleep quality: Making exercise a habit assists you in falling asleep faster and sleeping more soundly.
And by now we should all know that we need to move more – even if it’s just walking! If you’re struggling to do that – find something you enjoy, such as a fun dance class or hiking group, call a friend, try out a new yoga studio. There are lots of options; don’t be paralyzed by them – taking action for your health is key!
