3 Steps to Detoxing from Summer Overload

Bloated?  Sluggish?  Unfocused?

Rich foods, long travel days, irregular sleep schedules, and just plain travel stress can leave anyone needing a vacation from a vacation!

While some trips are filled with healthy foods, active rest, and well-needed relaxation, others may be bursting with adventures that excite our nervous systems, test our digestive tracks, and leave proper sleep in the dust.

Arriving home from these trips can require a bit of detoxification to resume normal functioning and following are three ways to do this!

1. Eliminate.

A fairly easy reminder…stop indulging in the things that built up your overload such as:

  • sugary, fried, and processed foods and drinks
  • alcohol
  • too much stagnation (i.e., sitting)/too little movement
  • overly busy schedule and not enough down time
  • going to bed late
  • excess stimulation

Switch out such toxins and stressors for fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, whole grains, water, and lean proteins as well as a quiet time, journaling, reading, exercise, and a normal sleep schedule.

2. Support.

There are plenty of ways to support a detoxification process.

Supplements such as:

  • milk thistle
  • dandelion
  • vitamin B complex
  • taurine
  • 20 billion CFU probiotics
  • Liver C™ by Mountain Peak Nutritionals
  • EveryDay Detox® Tea by Traditional Medicinals

can aid the liver and digestive track in the elimination process and

  • omega 3 fatty acids
  • vitamin D
  • spirulina
  • curcumin
  • green tea

help decrease inflammation.

In addition, intermittent fasting (eating within an 8 hour period and fasting throughout the remaining 16 hours of a day), can provide the digestive track rest when needed.  Building up a sweat through exercise, steam rooms, and saunas can help rid toxins through the skin.

Acupuncture and cupping are also supportive treatments that can calm an overactive nervous system and aid in the detoxification process.

Also, consider taking a break from unnecessary electronic usage such as that for social media, the news, games, and others and focus on grounding oneself through meditation, yoga, or walking in nature instead.

3. Maintain.

While a few days of mindful detoxification can be needed after a vacation, it’s also important to maintain such healthy choices long-term.

Keep up such efforts by monitoring how you feel, finding inspirational support and reminders, and seeking help for health issues that have went unaddressed.

Ways to do this can be:

  • making time to prioritize healthy cooking and eating
  • keeping a food journal
  • subscribing to a health and wellness magazine
  • downloading a supportive health app
  • creating a weekly exercise schedule/routine
  • talking with a loved one about physical, mental, and spiritual challenges and goals
  • scheduling an appointment with Dr. Graves or primary care physician

Detoxifying from summer fun may not sound fun at first, but it can be exactly what is needed to refresh and regroup after such seasonal adventures!
