Internal Wellness for External Beauty: Making the Right Resolutions
If beauty lies in that of the beholder,
why can we be so hard on ourselves when we look in the mirror?
As each new year approaches, resolutions abound for everything from losing weight to reducing wrinkles. And with our culture’s high priority on looks, we can find ourselves questioning everything from face fillers to daily diets with the hopes of a quick fix for our inevitable aging.
But growing older is unavoidable and although we can try to cease it, true beauty may lie in how we take care of ourselves on the inside to reflect how we look on the outside.
Looking Good Vs. Feeling Good
If you’re not sleeping well, eating poorly, suffering from pain, experiencing a lack of movement, dealing with gut issues, and/or not managing your stress, it may be difficult to find anything that will enhance your looks in a natural and sustainable way more than fixing the internal issue first.
As a naturopathic doctor, I recommend striving to take good care of your internal health so external beauty follows in a natural and healthy way.
I want people to feel like their best selves first because this can lead to more inner peace, happiness, and long-term results.
What will your motivation be in this new year to become your best self?
Will it be finding the root cause of an issue rather than ignoring it?
Will it be making choices to increase your immunity, support your heart, sleep better, or heal your gut?
Will it be receiving guidance to work through past trauma or present stress?
Try to make resolutions that better yourself overall rather than provide short-term relief. And even more important is to consider why you want to make a change.
Is it to feel accepted? To feel more lovable? To fit in with society?
Or
Is it to feel purpose in your life? To have more energy to play with your kids? To live longer?
Resolutions can be valuable in making the right choices for your life. Just make sure that your motivation for those resolutions are right as well.
Cost Vs. Investment
Think about how much you spend on your external looks versus your internal wellness.
There is nothing wrong with purchasing services or products for our external health (they can be nice treats!), but consider why those purchases are consistently made. Is it because of societal beliefs? ego? marketing? Or are they truly making you healthy and happy?
If health and happiness are what you are striving for, it may be worth your time, energy, and investment to focus on internal work first.
Be mindful of chasing beauty and youth in a vicious cycle that may never be enough.
Carefully consider how your budget is playing a role in your internal wellness versus your external looks and don’t be afraid to question your intentions (and that of society) to rethink priorities and perspectives.
Your Health as a Home
Think of your health as a home.
If the foundation of your home is unbalanced, the roof leaks, and the windows are cracked, sure, you can paint the outside for looks but the home is still not solid and strong.
Investing in your home’s safety and security, fixing problems as they arise, and giving your home plenty of love and care can keep it flourishing.
How do you choose to take care of your home?
Shifting your mindset from doing things for acceptance and ego to love and health can call for courage. It’s not always easy to recognize why you make the choices you do, but the realization can make all the difference in making lasting changes.
There is no better time than the present to take inventory of your motivations and tweak them, if necessary. It may be just the thing you need to be the change you want to see.
