10 Ways to Social Distance This Winter

Brrr…it’s cold out there!

Winter can be a time to cuddle up on the sofa, gather indoors, see movies, and enjoy a nice meal inside a restaurant.  But we all know that this year, winter activities need some adjustment in order to socially distance.

So let’s embrace the changes we have to make while still enjoying the season!

Following are 10 fun ways to social distance this winter:

1.Get Your Gear.
Winter is only as fun as the gear that keeps you warm and dry.  Opt for non-cotton, synthetic layers, waterproof jacket, pants, and boots, wool socks, and proper hat, gloves, and scarf (we also love disposable hand and feet warmers).  Take a backpack for when you need to shed layers, but never forget them at home – Colorado weather can change quickly.

2. Go Snowshoeing.
This low impact exercise can be enjoyed by the entire family!  Check out this list of some well-liked snowshoe trails and don’t forget to pack a picnic lunch with warm cider or hot chocolate.

3. Create a Hot Chocolate Bar.
Nothing is better than a cup of hot cocoa after a day of playing in the snow.  Welcome your household in from snow ball fights and snow angels with a hot chocolate bar!  Place out toppings such as peppermint extract, mini marshmallows, cinnamon, sprinkles, shaved coconut, and ground almonds.

4. Take Dip in the Hot Springs.
Colorado is home to a variety of hot springs and winter can be an exciting time to enjoy them.

Check out Mt. Princeton Hot Springs for a soak in the river and pools, Glenwood Hot Springs for a large swimming pool experience, Iron Mountain Hot Springs for a romantic day in a variety of pools, or Strawberry Park Hot Springs for a natural environment experience. *Make sure to read up on guidelines, openings, and social distancing measures before going.

5. Explore the Paint Mines.
A little over an hour drive from Castle Rock lies a beautiful geological open space.  The Paint Mines Interpretive Park is great for a mild, sunny winter day where adults and kids can explore the colorful clay and hoodoos for free.

6. Fondue.
We love this Swiss tradition for a romantic or fun evening in.   Order a fondue pot (if need be) and find your recipe (although, some grocers carry pre-made fondue packs that are quite good).

Chop up plenty of vegetables such as carrots, celery, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, cauliflower, and peppers as well as crusty bread.  It’s one of our favorites for holidays such as New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day.

7. Go Sledding.
Bring back the nostalgia of when you were a kid and hit the hill.  It can bring on great exercise as you climb up and even better laughs as you ride down.

8. Watch Old School Warren Miller Films.
If you’re a ski bum, or just want to be, a day on the couch watching Warren Miller films (ski documentaries) is where it’s at.  Just watching the beauty (and wipeouts!) as well as listening to the soundtracks can get you excited for a day on the slopes (even if it’s only in your dreams).

9. Tube.
Like sledding, tubing is a thrill.  Go locally or book a reservation at a tubing hill throughout the state that is practicing social distancing.

10. Go Ice Skating.
Lace up some skates and enjoy the ice!  Check out Evergreen Lake House, Keystone Resort, and YMCA of the Rockies.
