It’s not an easy time right now.

Jobs are at risk, uncertainly continues on,

and the possibility of contracting COVID-19 is still there.

It’s enough to bring out a bit of fear in any of us and if you are feeling it,

it’s normal…you’re human.

While fear is a natural emotion, it can also be a paralyzing one.  Feeling as though the weight of the world is on your shoulders with many circumstances out of your control can be detrimental to both your mental and physical health.

We aren’t here to tell you not to feel a certain way – it’s important you recognize and feel your emotions right now in order to process them.  However, we are here to provide tips that may be helpful in lessening fear and moving forward in the most positive way you possibly can.

You can take this time to create opportunity for growth and learning in your life – make something positive come out of it.

Following are 10 things you can try in order to stay
mentally and physically healthy during this time:

  1. Keep a Schedule: Don’t succumb to staying in pajamas and eating on the couch all day unless it’s your official day off. Keep to a schedule by getting dressed, working out, planning mental and food breaks, eating meals at your regular times, and sticking to your regular sleep schedule.
This is especially crucial for kids (particularly for summer break)!  Make a schedule together and post it on the fridge.
  1. Plan Quiet Time. Whether by yourself or with your family in the same room, it can be crucial for your and your family’s mental health to have silence in order to decompress, relax, and think every day.
Encourage everyone to read their own book, do a puzzle, have free computer time – by themselves, knowing that you are all there for each other, but can enjoy the company of each other in silence.
  1. Watch Screens Sparingly. Limit news and social media time to very little – if any, throughout the day. Make this a social media vacation if need be and only check in on the news briefly.
  1. Enjoy a Lunch and Learn. Take a break from social media and news outlets at lunch and give yourself a “lunch and learn” by clicking on something that allows you to grow.

  1. Escape with Books. Take a break from reality and sit down with a good book at night.
  1. Have Tea Time. To unwind and process the day, turn on relaxing music and make tea for the family later in the afternoon or evening. Encourage everyone to come together for 20-30 minutes to slow down and enjoy real conversation.  This can be a good, dedicated time to address kids’ fears or reminders and goals as a family during this time.
  1. Leave Expectations at the Door & Say No to Extra Stress. Don’t worry about what your house looks like or that laundry has piled up. Learn to let some things go – at least for now.  Focus on what’s most important – taking care of yourself, your family, and your monetary living responsibilities.

There is nothing wrong with saying no, postponing, or opting for take out once in a while.

What is important right now is taking care of your health, which can mean eliminating as much stress during this already stressful time as possible.

  1. Take Supplements. Anxiety can run high during times like this; fortunately there are supplements that can help calm the nervous system and help with relieving anxiousness.

  1. Make a Determination. What are you determined to learn from this? How can you change your life for the better because of these circumstances?  Write it down, put it up, remind yourself morning and night and be determined follow through.
  1. Be the Light. If everyone around you seems down and fearful, YOU can be the beacon of light. Remind yourself and others what to be grateful for and how we can work through this together.  How we act during these times can provide us the opportunity to bring out conditions in our life state that are compassionate, kind, and loving while being courageous and strong.
