Neck, back, shoulder or elbow.  Hips, knee, hand or foot.

It doesn’t matter where it is…pain is pain and it can be downright debilitating.

One of the most common ailments Dr. Graves treats is pain, with a relief success rate of approximately 70-80%!

So how does he do it?
With a holistic, Eastern medicine approach that includes acupuncture and at times, herbal supplements.

We’re talking to Dr. Graves about treating pain with acupuncture and the effect is has on helping people get back to normal.

Why do you think you are you seeing so many clients with pain issues right now?
There are a lot of reasons, but in particular, we are now seeing the effects of the stay-at-home order from the past few months.

Our lives have been disrupted from what we typically used to do to move our bodies and manage stress – we weren’t (and in some cases still not) able to play many sports, enjoy the gym, or even just sit in our usual desk chair at work.

Because of this, pain is popping up for many, resulting from everything from old injuries to tight muscles and tendons from stress or unprocessed emotions.

What type of pain do you treat with acupuncture?
Generally, I use acupuncture to help with pain in the areas of the:

– neck

– shoulders

– back

– elbow

– hips

– feet

– hands

as well as any other locations that have pain without known causes.

Does acupuncture help?
It definitely can!  Although it’s not a guarantee, many clients have experienced pain relief with acupuncture.

I work with many people who have visited their general care practitioner who only provided an option of medication to deal with the pain.  This can be okay short term, but it doesn’t treat the underlying cause many times and isn’t ideal for long-term pain management.

Others have also worked with chiropractors and/or physical therapists but have found that even though they have been aligned properly and their muscles have strengthened, the musculoskeletal system has not been healed.

Acupuncture, as well as cupping and herbal supplements such as curcumin, CBD, and magnesium, work to heal injury and tightness, restoring proper health and movement to the area.

How long before someone can feel relief?
Depending on how long the pain has been felt and how intense it is, relief can be felt typically within 2-4 sessions, although sometimes, it can happen after the very first visit.

If after 4 sessions the pain has not become better managed, I typically refer clients out for imaging and additional tests.

As we age – as early as in our 30s or 40s – our flexibility decreases and our muscles can bring on pain because of it.  All it takes is one night of sleeping in an uncomfortable position, lifting something heavy, or playfully chasing the kids around to feel the effects of a less limber musculoskeletal system.

But you don’t have to succumb to pain!  Acupuncture and a holistic plan of treatment can get you back to feeling your best again.
