Food Allergy Testing

Food allergy test, IgG food allergy test, food allergies treatment
Food allergy test

Numerous patients come looking for help, wondering if food allergies could be causing some of thier health issues. The difference between food allergies, food sensitivities/delayed allergies, or food intolerances and the current lab test that are available will be discussed.

Food allergies are usually life threatening, medical emergency, and present as a sudden onset. Some signs and symptoms, difficulty breathing, swollen mouth, swollen throat, Itching mouth, lips, nausea, vomiting, diarhea, hives, asthma, etc. Food allergies usually occur within minutes to 1 hour after coming in contact with the food and are caused by an IgE antibody.

Food Intolerance is a can be either a genetic or autoimmune process, ie lactose intolerance or celiac disease. These usually occur soon after eating the offending food but are not life threatening. They can also present with similair symptoms of food sensitivities.

Food Sensitivities/delayed food allergies cover a broad range of issues. Food sensitivites can occur any where for immediately after eating foods to up to 72 hours later. They can be related to numerous health conditions and are usually caused by an IgG antibody. The symptoms are less intense than a true food allergy but still cause many health issues.

Symptoms related to food sensitivities but not limited too, are:

Fatigue

Lethargy

dark circles under eyes

Needing to sleep after you have eaten

Mood swings

Depression

Restlessness

Headaches

Migraines

Joint pain

Gas or bloating

Water retention

Indigestion

Frequent infections

Recurrent sinus problems

Allergies

Post nasal drip

And many more.

Diseases related to food sensitivities are but not limited too:

Skin issues: ezcema, psorasis, acne, rashes, itching

Mental: ADHD/ADD, anxiety, depression,

Digestion: IBS, Heartburn, Crohn's, Ulcerative colitis, gas, bloating, constipation, diarhea, nausea, vomiting,

Immune: Allergies, Asthma, Autoimmune, Frequent sinus infections, Rhematoid arthritis, Frequent illness, swelling in the joints, pain,

General: Fatigue, Insomnia, mouth sores, brain fog, mood swings, headaches, migraines,

Lab Test:

Skin prick test/Blood test:  (food allergies) IgE- this test is specific for food allergies i.e. analphaysis and is usually run by your Primary Care Doctor or Allergiest. The most common results are peanuts and shellfish.

Food Sensitivities/Delayed food allergies- IgG 96 food sensitivity panel, US biotek- a finger stick test that test reactivity to 96 of most common foods. Usually followed up to an elimination/challenge diet.

Elimination/Challenge- Considered the gold standard but only recommended for most severe cases. Consist of eliminating most common food sensitivities: Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Soy, Citrus, for 3 weeks and then reintroducing one food at a time to see if there is a reaction.

Treatment:

Once your food sensitivities/delayed food allergies are identified, elimination is key. Treatment depends on the amount and severity of sensitivities/delayed food allergies. If mild to moderated, elimination, and some gastrointestinal repair is done with herbs and nutrients, ie probiotics, omega-3s, glutamine, etc. If severe or numerous sensitivities/delayed food allergies are present, and more indepth protocol for "leaky gut syndrome" is recommended.  Once identification, elimination and treatment is done than most patients can reintroduce small amounts of the offending food without any effects.

Summary

Clinically food sensitivities play a big part in many of the health issue my patient deal with. Although currently no food sensitvity testing is 100% accurate, I usually recommend an appiontment and an IgG test to get a good guide of what foods are causing your health issues.

Acupuncture and IVF

IVf acupucnture castle rock, infertility

If you or your spouse are considering IUI or IVF then acupuncture and chinese medicine should be considered to increase the effectiveness of the treatment. Acupuncture is a safe and effective procedure that helps increase blood flow to uterus, balance hormones, assist egg production, and relieve stress.

Beyond the medical benefits of acupuncture, the mental aspects of stress relief and balanced emotions are just as valuable as the physical benefits. Treatment protocols tend to consist of 2 to 3 months of treatments. Usually, 6 to 8 weeks before IVF, acupuncture helps prepare the uterus for implantation, assist in the production of healthy follicles and improve the lining of the uterus. After IVF, acupuncture is ideally done the same day after an IVF or IUI procedure to help increase the chances of implantation, and dilate the cervix to allow the embryo to be transferred more easily. If successful acupuncture is usually continued for 4 to 6 weeks to assist developement of the embryo/fetus.

Infertility treatment can be a roller coster ride of mental, emotional and physical issues and the patients that take the time to add acupuncture into their treatments tend to have more of a joy ride versus a ride of terror. So email us if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to working with you.

Natural Treatments for Frequent Ear Infections

ear infection, chronic ear infections, natural treatments for ear infections

Recurrent ear infections are something I see very often in my practice. Finding and treating the root cause is usally simple. Most of the time children come to my office with recurrent ear infections, and/or frequent colds/flus. In my experience the root cause of these issues tend to be hidden or delay food allergies.

Hidden or delayed food allergies are different than acute food allergies. Acute food allergies i.e. peanuts, fish, etc are usually easily identified by thier reaction. Acute food allergies present as a sudden or quick onset and have swelling of the mouth, lips, throat and can cause trouble breathing. They are caused by a quick acting immune cell IgE. Acute food allergies are a medical emergency and need to be treated as one.  Where as hidden or delay food allergies are a different type of immune cell.

The reaction from a hidden or delayed food allergy may take up to 12 to 48 hours to present and the symptoms vary greatly.  Hidden and delayed food allergies are caused by an IgG immune cell. When it comes to recurrent ear infections hidden or delay food allergies  can cause a low grade inflammation in the mucous membranes. These include the ear canal and eustacian tubes. When the eustacian tubes become inflammed they do not drain the fluid from the ear properly thus leading to ear infections.  In addition, treatment with antibioitcs destroys the good bacteria in the digestive tract causing a weakened immune system, thus making recurrent infections more likely.

Luckily finding the root cause, hidden and delayed food allergies, is a simple fingerstick blood test by US biotek labs. Once the blood test is done and the results are in, by eliminating the reactive foods, this in turn allows the inflammation in the ears to decrease. Next, natural supplements are used to rebuild the immune system thus preventing future ear infections and recurrent antibiotic use. If you have any questions about frequent ear infections or food allergy testing please email or call.

Adrenal Fatigue, Exhaustion and Burnout!

Adrenal fatigue, adrenal exhaustion, fatigue

Do you suffer from fatigue, exhaustion, trouble focusing, nervousness, sleep disturbances, and a list of symptoms then you may have adrenal fatigue? In today's culture I treat patients with adrenal issues on a daily basis. Many of my patients go to thier family doctor with the above issues and have labs done that come back "normal" or the doctor wants to prescribe antidepressants or sleep medication. Fortunately there are better and safer options to help you regain your health and vitality. In the following article we will discuss some signs and symptoms of adrenal fatigue, how to diagnosis and what to expect from treatment.

Adrenal fatigue, sometimes call adrenal exhaustion, or adrenal burnout can affect almost anyone but I usually see it in patients from thier mid 30's and beyond. It more commonly affects women starting around age 35 when hormones start to slowly change.  Some of the symptoms are fatigue, inability to tolerate stress, exhaustion, nervousness, sleep issues (trouble falling or staying asleep), weight issues, irritability, trouble concentrating, lack of motivation, low libido, intolerance to cold and many others.

Fortunately, even though mainstream doctors are not trained to recognize and treat adrenal fatigue, it can be diagnosed and treated very safe and effectively. The best lab test to check the function of the adrenal glands is a saliva test. 4 saliva test in 1 day give us a good pick of your adrenal gland function over a 12 hour period. Since the key to adrenal health is that it is supposed to be high in the mornings and low at night getting a full days picture is the most accurate way to diagnose the type of adrenal dysfuntion. Once the labs are reviewed a treatment plan consisting of herbal and nutrient interventions are made. The length of treatment is usually 3 to 6 months with the majority of patients feeling better within the first 4 weeks. So in summary, if you have any of these symptoms and aren't finding the help you need, give us a call or email us and schedule an appiontment and start getting your life back!

Preventing Asthma, Allergies and Ezcema with Natural Medicine

natural asthma treatments, castle rock, highlands ranch, colorado springs, denver

One core philosophy of natural medicine in prevention...so when it comes to allergies, asthma, and eczema   there are a few things that can be extremely beneficial to future children of parents that suffer from any of these illnesses.  In the US the estimated 60 million people suffer from asthma and allergies,  9 people in the US die every day and  yearly cost of treating  allergies and asthma is estimated at  21 billion dollars. The chances of passing one of these diseases to your children are very high. If both parents have one of them your child has a 75% chance of developing them if only one parent has any of these allergic diseases than your child has a 50% chance of developing one of them.

The good news is that these illnesses are highly preventable during pregnancy.  To prevent these diseases in your children there are 2 natural medicines that I believe every pregnant woman should take not only to decrease the chances of allergies, asthma, and eczema but also to increase your future babies’ immune system, brain development and skin health.

The First one is Probiotics; the mothers who took Probiotics daily throughout their pregnancy decreased their children’s incidence of allergies by 40%. Probiotics are easy to take, I recommend taking at least 10 billion live bacteria a day, 2 companies I like are Jarrow and Pharmax (no affiliation with either company) which can usually be done by taking 1 capsule a day.  Probiotics also helps mother immune system function better so your chances of getting sick while pregnant are less.

The 2nd nutrient is omega -3 fatty acids aka fish oil.  The America diet is very deficient in omega -3 fatty acids but by taking 900mg of omega 3 fatty acids a day you can reduce your child’s chances by 30%.  I prefer Nordic naturals Pro Omega (no affiliation) just 2 capsules a day provide 1200mg of omega 3. I recommend up to 4 capsules a day in the last trimester to help also with brain development.  So if you or your loved one suffer from allergies, asthma or eczema and want to prevent this in your children take these 2 nutrients along with a good prenatal to reduce the chance of your child developing these disease by up to 70%.  If you or your child already suffers from asthma, allergies or eczema and you are looking at holistic or natural options give us a call and make an appointment today

Infertility, Hormone Issues and Plastics

natural iinfertility castle rock, acupuncture infertility, hormones castle rock, highlands ranch, elizabeth, parker, franktown

A new study has linked plastics and chemicals to a higher rate of infertility. Couples that struggled with infertility had three to five times the amount of phalates in thier urine compared to couples that achieved pregnancy naturally.  These phalates come from commonly used plastics in cosmetics, tolietries, shampoo, conditioner, nail polish, plastic wrapped food, etc. Phalates disrupt hormones and can lead to infertility problems in men and woman.

So how do you protect your self and especially your children.

Eliminate tolietries, cosmetics, lotions, perfumes, laundry detergent, soaps, finger nail polish, etc that are not naturally based and scent and dye free. Anything with a strong scent should be avoided.

Use more natural based products. to check what products are safe, click here

Natural Solutions for High Blood Pressure

natural high blood pressure treatments, castle rock, highlands ranch, denver, colorado springs, acupuncture high blood pressure, hypertension, 80109, 80104, 80108, 80107, 80134

High blood pressure effects millions of men and women across the US. Many people are looking for alternatives or natural medicine instead of their prescription medication to keep their blood pressure or hypertension within the normal range. Fortunately there are a lot of ways to lower blood pressure without medication. As with all conditions a holistic approach to high blood pressure works best. First we start with the basics like avoiding cigarettes which can increase blood pressure and reducing alcohol intake for men to less than 2 drinks a day. and women to 1 drink a day.  As for diet, many things can help like reducing salt and caffiene while increase fruits, vegetables, and lean meats, not only does this help with blood pressure, but the antioxidants in fruits and vegetables help protect the blood vessels from plaques and athersclerosis. The third factor is exercise and physical activity, not only does physical activity help the blood vessels elasticity and lower blood pressure it also helps manage stress, which can lead to high blood pressure. So you get twice the benefits for high blood pressure with exercise. Acupuncture for high blood pressure can be helpful by relaxing the vessels and balancing the bodies nervous system. Finally adding in targeted natural solutions for high blood pressure like, CoQ10, arginine, magnesium, hawthorne, rauwolfia,  etc can help normalize blood pressure. Feel free to email or call us today if you have questions or would like to make an appiontment to get your high blood pressure under control.

natural remedies for cold sores or herpes

natural cure, natural remedies for cold sores, herpes, castle rock acupuncture, castle rock natural holistic medicine, highlands ranch natural doctor, parker natural doctor, holistic doctor, ND

Frequent or recurrent herpes outbreaks can cause severe frustration and pain for patients Fortunately, wether its cold sores, shingles, genital herpes or post herpetic nueroalgia,   they can all be helped with natural medicine, natural cures, and/or natural remedies. In my practice I have helped several patients struggling with these issues. I combine diet, acupuncture, and natural medicines like herbs and nutrients to help patients recover from these issues.

When discussing herpes we first start with diet. Foods high in the amino acid arginine allow the herpes virus to replicate causing outbreaks, while foods high in lysine help prevent outbreaks.

Foods to include (unless you are allergic or sensitive ) in your diet if you suffer from cold sores or herpes are :

Dairy, especially fermented like kefir, yogurt, cheese, sour cream, etc

Fish and Seafood

Chicken, Turkey, Lamb

Eggs

Potatoes

Brewers Yeast

Foods to avoid during outbreaks and if you have recurrent outbreaks are:

Chocolate

Peanuts

Nuts, Seeds

Coconut

Wheat Germ

Granola

Alcohol

Coffee

Sugar

Foods to eat in moderation are:

Whole Grains

Beans

Sprouts

Eggplant, tomatoes, squah, zuchini etc

Some herbs and nutrients that are used to treat and prevent herpes are L- lysine, larrea, olive leaf extract, zinc, and others.

Acupuncture and chinese medicine can also be very effective addition in dealing with the pain from herpes, shingles, and post herpetic neuralgia.  If you suffer from cold sores or herpes and are looking for natural remedies or natural sloutins that are safe and effective. Good story on Infertility and Acupuncture by CBS news

Can Acupuncture Help You Conceive?

By
Raksha Shetty

(CBS)  It's estimated that after a year of trying to conceive, 10 percent of American couples are unable to get pregnant on their own.

The vast majority of them turn to traditional fertility treatments for help, but a growing number are also trying alternative therapies, including acupuncture, says Saturday Early Show's Dr. Mallika Marshall.

More and more women are delaying childbirth into their late 30s and early 40s than ever before. In fact, according to the U.S. Census Report on Fertility in America, about 20 percent of women ages 35-39 are childless in 2002. In 1976, only 10 percent of women in that age category had never given birth.

Because a woman's fertility declines as she ages, more and more women are having trouble getting pregnant.

What are the traditional options to battle infertility?

Marshall says it depends on the underlying cause of the infertility, whether it's a male factor (such as a low sperm count), or it's a matter of egg quality in the woman, or whether the woman has blocked Fallopian tubes or trouble ovulating.

But depending on the case, your fertility doctor may recommend taking drugs to stimulate ovulation, or intrauterine insemination (where the sperm is placed directly in the woman's uterus) or in vitro fertilization (where a sperm and egg are united outside the uterus and later placed in the womb after fertilization).

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese treatment that involves placing tiny hair-like needles in the skin as a way of stimulating energy points that are thought to be central to your spiritual, mental, emotional and physical balance. Acupuncture is used to treat a variety of maladies such as headaches and back pain. For fertility, the needles are placed in energy points linked to the reproductive organs to improve energy flow to those areas.

Why should you try it?

Most women who choose acupuncture are doing it together with traditional infertility treatments. But some couples have undergone multiple cycles of IVF or other fertility treatments and nothing seems to be working. And they hope that acupuncture might improve their chances.

Also, fertility treatments can be incredibly expensive. For example, intrauterine insemination can cost hundreds of dollars and a single cycle of IVF can cost $10,000-$20,000. So couples are looking for other options that could possibly give them a greater chance at success.

Does it hurt?

No, not really, says Marshall, who has had acupuncture before. The needles sting a bit the first time you have it done, because you don't know what to expect. But then you get used to it and it's nothing. So if you have a needle phobia, don't automatically dismiss acupuncture. It's very relaxing.

How acupuncture works

It's still not entirely clear how the technique works, but there is some evidence that it increases the production of endorphins, or brain chemicals that make you feel good and help reduce stress. It may also improve blood supply to the ovaries, which improves their function, and the uterus, which can make it easier to nourish a fetus and reduce the risk of miscarriage.

The research

Marshall cites a 2002 German study suggesting that acupuncture may, in fact, work. The study looked at 160 women undergoing IVF, half of whom received acupuncture along with IVF, and the other half who received IVF alone. They found pregnancy rates among the women undergoing acupuncture were significantly higher.

The cost

Acupuncture can cost a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars depending on where you go and how long you need treatment. And it's often not covered by insurance.

What should you do if you're interested on pursuing acupuncture for infertility?

First, you want to see a traditional fertility specialist to see what your underlying fertility issues are.

You can then get a referral from your fertility doctor to a reputable acupuncturist that may be affiliated with a major medical center.

You want to find someone who is trained and licensed in acupuncture and has a lot of experience.

Other alternative therapies used by women trying to conceive are yoga, meditation, relaxation techniques, and massage therapy. Some people are also trying herbal remedies, but as with any of these alternative therapies, you should talk to your fertility doctor before trying any of them.

Research Proving Food as Addictive as Cocaine

castle rock naturopath, castle rock acupuncture, castle rock weight loss

Finally studies and the media are showing what us naturopaths have known for years. so lets start with

The Bad News

Food is addictive just like drugs. High sugary and high fat foods cause the body to release chemicals that affect the reward centers of the brain just like drugs.  Similair to drugs the body develops tolerance/addiction to these foods so that you have to continually eat more sugary and fat foods to get the same reward and pleasure activation in the brain. This is why these food are addictive. This makes it very difficult to resist those foods and stick to dietary especially with the holidays coming up. This pleasure activation/addictive quality causes us all to get caught in a trap. Eating high sugary/fatty foods causes feelings of relaxation stress reduction, and pleasure, but after awhile those feel good chemicals decline and the feelings go away and the cravings come back and so these foods are eaten again. Eventually the body develops tolerance just like to drugs where more food is needed to create those same feelings of pleasure, thus the addiction!! and now....

The Good News

Just like with drugs, food detox/rehab is possible.  Completely cutting out these foods for a short period of time, such as in a 2 or 3 week detox or strict diet those pleasure centers can reset. if you have every done anything like this you have experienced it.  That is why when people first start a diet they feel miserable because they are depressed because thier pleasure centers aren't being activated, but overtime those pleasure centers readjust. That is why at first eating more fruits and veggies doesn't taste as good but if done over time and in addition to eliminating high fat and high sugar foods, Fruits and veggies start to taste good and sweet again.

The Game Plan

If you feel like you are caught in this addiction or pleasure trap, consider a detox/ diet change. This can be hard this time or year and may need to wait until after the holidays.

The diet should eliminate all high processed foods and only include fruits, veggies, nuts, beans, seeds, and lean meats and should be at least 2-3 weeks long to allow those pleasure centers to reset.  After that sweets can be put back into the diet in small amounts very slowly but be careful because for some people small amounts of these high sugary/fatty foods will cause a quick "relaspe" into the food addiction cycle.

So if you feel like this is happening to you and you need some help going through food "rehab" and getting out of this vicious cycle. Let me know!

Keeping Your Kids Healthy this Winter

Here are some ways to kid your kids healthy this winter

1) Keep kids warm and cover head and necks, Fresh air good, cold kiddos, bad

According to Chinese Medicine the back of the neck is place where the elements such as wind, cold, heat can invade and cause colds and flu's that is why it is important to protect kids' heads, ears,  and necks with hats and hooded jackets, and warm chilled kids up quickly with blankets or warm bath

2) Eat plenty of whole foods

Whole foods, like fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, lean meats, eggs, whole grains are packed with nutrients. and these nutrients are needed to produce a healthy immune system in kids. if can be hard to get kids to eat veggies so try having them color a color wheel and if they eat different colors from the wheel they get a star and then eventually a reward. Also remember kids diets reflect parents diets so if parents don't eat alot of fruits and veggies then your kids probably wont want to either.

3) Plenty of rest

Winter is the time of rest and restoration, so making sure kids get plenty of sleep and naps at the first sign of a cold/flu is important in preventing it from turning into an infection that may require antibiotics

4) Immune boosting Supplements daily during fall and winter

Vitamin D 3- 20 to 25 iu per lb of body wieght- winter is a time when vitamin D levels drop and colds and flu increase, Vitamin D helps keep the immune system strong and fight of colds and flus, I recommend liquid vitamin D drops that can be added to food or just place on the tongue of kids

Probiotics- daily 2-10billion- ages 0-2 infant probiotics, ages 2 and above - regular probiotics. When probiotics are taking daily kids get sick less often and less severe. they help produce a healthy immune system.

Omega-3 fatty acids-  100-150mg of DHA a day. Can get liquid or gel caps at local health food store

Multivitamin- Children are growing rapidly and nutrients in our food supply is declining and kids need plenty of vitamins and minerals for proper developement. Find a multivitamin that your kids enjoys and is natural.

5) Treat early using Natural products,

Treatment should start at first sign or illness, runny nose, fussiness, tiredness, fever, etc

Eliminate mucous producing foods, ie all dairy products and high sugar foods, sweets until over illness.

Use healthy immune system supplement and in specific immune boosting formulas, such as herbal glycerites from Gaia kids herbs and warming vapor chest rub from Gaia kids herbs

6) Great Resources for every parent

An Encyclopedia of Natural Healing for Children and Infants by Mary Bove, ND

Homeopathic Medicine for Children and infants by Dana Ullman

Hidden and Delayed Food Allergies

What are hidden and delayed food allergies?

Millions of Americans suffer from the symptoms of food allergy or intolerance and don’t know it.  Common foods eaten by most people can produce a variety of physical and mental disorders.  Much has been learned about treating food allergies/intolerances, once they’ve been discovered.  With great patience and good detective work, many people are able to discover the offending food items.  In other cases, you may want to confer with a physician regarding this problem.

What are some of the symptoms of food allergies?

A wide range of symptoms from headache to heartburn, arthritis to anxiety, rashes to restlessness, stuffed nose to suicidal feelings, and constipation to colitis, can result from the foods and drinks we like best or eat most often.  These symptoms most likely indicate hidden and delayed food allergies. Other reactions can occur suddenly and are more serious, producing symptoms as severe as breathing impairment, skin rashes or urticaria (hives), or even shock.  People who react in this way to certain foods usually know from experience that they have a problem with true and severefood allergies.

More often, however, unsuspected food intolerances produce a variety of milder, annoying symptoms, which linger and recur.  Such symptoms as sinus congestion, headaches, chronic fatigue, skin rashes, asthma, and colitis are fairly common physical reactions.  Mental and emotional problems are common as well because the brain and nervous system are part of the physical body, susceptible to physical as well as psychological influences.  Depression, anxiety, irritability, and hyperactivity in adults or children are often caused by chronic food intolerance.

How to detect hidden and delayed food allergies?

To detect food allergies I use an ELISA food allergy test. This test measure the immune reaction to 96 common foods. Once the test results are in then the foods that you react to are eliminated until symptoms improve. Findind and eliminating your food allergies can be a big step in your journey to recover and long term health and wellness.

Natural Solutions for ADHD or ADD

adhd natural treatments, herbal medicine adhd, add, natural doctor adhd, holistic adhd, add, homeopathy add, adhd, colorado springs, denver, castle rock, parker, highlands ranch, homeopathy adhd,

Treating children with ADD/ADHD medication can be a doubled edge sword. One side is that the medications can be effective and help provide relief; the other side is that they can have severe adverse effects and don’t provide a real long term solution for children with ADD/ADHD.  In 2006 the FDA advisory board recommended a Black Box Warning on Ritalin, Concerta, Methylin, Metadate, Adderall and Adderall XR.  A Black Box Warning is the strongest warning placed on medication, a label only 10% of all medications carry.  This warning was recommended due to the adverse effects of these mediations such as sudden death, toxic reactions and heart attacks along with the possibility of increasing aggression, hostility, anxiety, depression, paranoia and the unknown long term effects on brain development.  Currently, the American Heart Association also recommends that anyone starting these medications, child or adult, have a heart evaluation. Since these are serious adverse effects a more holistic approach to ADD/ADHD should be used.  These facts create a serious risk for the children of this nation.  Is there any hope for kids with ADHD/ADD?

When one first begins the treatment of ADHD/ADD, it must be viewed as a multifactoral problem that cannot be quickly remedied by a pill.  A child’s behavior and emotions can be affected by diet, nutrient deficiencies, neurotransmitter imbalances, food sensitivities, environment, genetics and social factors.  Proper treatment must address all these issues.  Once all these issues are addressed and no improvements are detected, only then should medications can be considered.  So what does this approach look like?

First, a proper diagnosis should be made by a doctor, psychologist or psychiatrist.  Once a proper diagnosis has been made, then the treatment options need to be considered.  First is parental support.  With the support of a counselor or psychologist, improvements in the child’s behavior can be made and parents can feel empowered with tools to help their children succeed.  One study compared medications to counseling and concluded that the medications did not show any greater benefits for children with ADHD/ADD.    Next neurotransmitter imbalances ie, serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine need to be balanced using amino acid therapy. In a recent study amino acid precursors demonstrated greater effectiveness over Ritalin and Stattera and without any side effects. (citation)   If no improvement is seen with the above interventions than diet, food sensitivities and nutrient deficiencies need to be addressed.  Children with ADHD/ADD can be sensitive to many different dietary choices they can have blood sugar imbalances and /or food sensitivities.  Parents can begin with a diet that helps stabilize their child’s blood sugar and avoids artificial colors and sweeteners.  A child’s breakfast should include a good source of protein and fiber and be limited on the amount of sugar and refined foods like sweet cereals and juice.  A few examples of this may be eggs, turkey bacon, yogurt, natural peanut butter or even a high fiber protein bar.  This step helps prevent the mid-morning crash in blood sugar that can cause children with ADHD/ADD to act out.  The same goes for lunch, dinner and snacks.  Meals should include protein, veggies and whole grains such as a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread with carrot sticks, apple sauce, etc.  Healthy snack or meal ideas can be found at your local library or by simple searches on the internet. Food sensitivities can also play a role. In clinical practice, the main offending foods tend to be dairy, wheat/gluten, and/or eggs. Children with ADHD/ADD tend to have an oversensitive nervous system that is easily stimulated by these foods. Testing for these foods sensitivities is done easily in children with a finger stick using an ELISA food allergy test.  Children with ADHD/ADD also have documented deficiencies in magnesium, zinc, vitamin B6 and essential fatty acids to name a few.  A starting point for a child with ADHD/ADD would be to take a high quality multi mineral/vitamin formula, an essential fatty acid formula, high in DHA, and a good probiotic supplement.  Once the diet, nutrient deficiencies and behavior modifications are addressed, then children have the foundations to make improvements.  If progress is not significant, food sensitivities or other root causes should be explored with a Dr. Graves.  It is only after the above interventions have made and still nothing seems to help than medications can be considered for severe cases.  With this approach the full potential of these children can be achieved and fulfilled.  They cannot only live a full and normal life, but surpass their teachers’, counselors’ and parents’ expectations.

Low Energy, Fatigue, Burned Out?

Almost Every day a new patient comes into my office and shares a similiar story. It often goes something like this. "over the last few years I have just been exhausted. I feel tired all day long. i have been to my regular doctor and he has run all the test and says everything is fine. They recommend anti depressant medication but I am not depressed I am just tired!, can you help?"  At this piont I respond that I see this type of thing almost everyday and that natural medicine is the best choice of treatment for this type of condition. This condition is what is called adrenal fatigue or adrenal burnout.

Adrenal Fatigue is one of the most wide spread health issues in America today but also one of the most under diagnosed. The adrenal glands are small glands that sit on top of the kidneys and produce your stress hormones, mainly cortisol. During times of stress your cortisol is supposed to go higher to help you deal with the stress and during times or rest your cortisol is suppose to decrease to let your body rest and restore. The problem comes since we live in a high stressed, over worked, over stimulated culture that causes our adrenal glands to constantly produce excess cortisol. Eventually this leads to a wide varitey of symptoms from feeling tired for no reason, trouble thinking and remembering, depression, irrtability, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, weight gain, lethargy, low lidibo, sugar cravings,  blood sugar imbalances,  mood swings, and the list goes on and on.

The Good news! Adrenal fatigue and adrenal gland function can be easily tested with an adrenal stress test   and treated with natural medicine. Once this test is done, we get the results and place patients on a protocol to restore thier adrenal gland function. Soon they begin to feel like themselves again and regain the energy and vitality they thought was gone for good.

If this sounds like something you deal with or if you have any other questions about fatigue or any other symptoms talked about above, please give us a call or email us and we can help you get back to health!!

Digestive Health

stool analysis, food allergies, food allergy test, denver, castle rock, colorado springs

Everyday patients come to my office looking for help with their digestive complaints.  Patients are suffering from wide range of symptoms from heartburn, nausea, indigestion, bloating, pain, candida, yeast, diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and the list goes on and on.  These digestive problems can also lead to more problems in other areas of the body, like fatigue, aches and pains, anxiety, trouble thinking just to name of few. Digestive problems can affect infants to elderly.  The can range from mildly annoying to completely debilitating.   Most patients have seen many doctors and have had many tests and procedures without finding much relief from their issues.  Well if this is you, then there is finally some good news.

We offer many natural solutions for digestive problems, like IBS, GERD, Constipation, Crohn’s disease,  diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, Candida, parasites, Food Allergies, etc.  Natural medicine is great at restoring and healing up the digestive tract, but first we start by truly identifying what is causing these digestive problems.  At Colorado Natural Medicine, we do this with two lab tests, a comprehensive food allergy panel and a comprehensive digestive and stool analysis.  The food allergy test measures the immune systems reaction to 96 different foods; this shows which foods may be causing their symptoms.  Once these food allergies are identified and eliminated, then digestive repair can start to happen.  The second test we do is a comprehensive digestive and stool analysis this measure numerous factors such as yeast, Candida, inflammation, parasites, absorption, sIgA, and more.  This comprehensive stool analysis can provide great insight into treating and recovering from digestive problems.

We offer food allergy testing and stool analysis for Denver, Castle Rock, Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas. If you have any questions feel free to email  or call us.  We look forward to helping you on your journey back to health.
